China travel routes

Ready-made itineraries that turn a map of China into a trip you can actually book, sequenced for the smartest mix of rail, flights and time on the ground.

A route turns a list of cities into an actual trip. Each itinerary below is built around how China really connects — high-speed rail between regional hubs, a single internal flight where the distances get big, and enough breathing room that you are not packing and unpacking every night.

Pick by the kind of trip you want: a tightly-planned first visit, a sweeping grand tour, or something built around food, nature or getting off the beaten path. Every route links to full guides for the cities it passes through, so you can go as deep as you like on each stop.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to see China properly?
Two weeks lets a first-timer cover the classic triangle of Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai without rushing. Three weeks opens up a second region — Sichuan, Yunnan or the south. Under a week, focus on one or two cities.
Should I take the train or fly between cities in China?
High-speed rail is usually better for journeys under about 1,500 km — it is fast, frequent and drops you in the city centre. For longer hops (Beijing to Kunming, say) a single internal flight saves a day. Our routes specify the best option for each leg.
Can I customise these routes?
Yes — treat them as a backbone. Add or drop a city, extend a stop, or splice two routes together. Each route links to full city guides so you can swap segments easily.
Do these routes work for independent travellers?
They are designed for independent travel — no tour group required. Everything is bookable yourself: trains, flights, hotels and tickets. The guides flag where a little Mandarin or a translation app helps.
