Getting around

Beijing to Harbin is a 6.5 to 7.5-hour high-speed train ride, second class ¥434.5, departing from Beijing Chaoyang or Beijing station multiple times daily. Inside Beijing, the metro (¥3-7 per ride) covers all major sites. In Harbin, taxis are cheap (¥8 flag fall, ¥2.4 per km) and useful because many ice festival sites lie outside the metro network, though Line 1 and Line 2 reach Central Street and the railway station.

    Day 1 · Beijing

    Arrive in Beijing

    Fly into Beijing Capital or Daxing airport, take the Airport Express to the city (¥25, 30 minutes to Dongzhimen from Capital, ¥35 to Caoqiao from Daxing), then transfer by metro to your hotel. Walk to Wangfujing snack street in the evening for skewered scorpions (¥10), lamb kebabs (¥8) and candied hawthorn (¥5). Settle in early because tomorrow starts at dawn.

    Stay: 3 nights, Dongcheng district near Wangfujing station (Line 1), walking distance to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City.

    Day 2 · Beijing

    Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

    Arrive at Tiananmen Square by 6:45 a.m. for the 7:30 a.m. flag-raising ceremony (free, bring your passport for security checks). Walk north through Tiananmen Gate (¥15) into the Forbidden City (¥60 October-April, book at www.dpm.org.cn up to seven days ahead, entry closes at 3:30 p.m. in winter). Spend three hours walking the central axis from the Meridian Gate through the Hall of Supreme Harmony to the Imperial Garden. Exit via the north gate to Jingshan Park (¥2) and climb the central pavilion for a rooftop view of the golden palace roofs.

    Great Wall at Mutianyu

    Take the direct Mutianyu shuttle bus (¥80 return, 1.5 hours each way, departs 8 a.m. from outside Dongzhimen transport hub on Line 2 and Line 13) or book a private car. Entry is ¥45 plus ¥140 for cable car return or ¥100 for chairlift plus toboggan descent. Walk west along the restored battlements for two hours, less crowded than Badaling and more photogenic. Return to Beijing by 4 p.m., then walk through the hutong alleys north of Houhai Lake and eat dinner at Yao's Fried Liver (Yaoji Chaogan, 209 Gulou Dongdajie, ¥18 per bowl, nearest metro Gulou Dajie on Line 2 and Line 8).

    Beijing to Harbin

    Check out and take metro Line 2 to Beijing station or Beijing Chaoyang station. Board a high-speed train to Harbin West (6.5 to 7.5 hours, second class ¥434.5, book at least one week ahead at 12306.cn or Trip.com). Arrive mid-afternoon, take metro Line 1 from Harbin West to Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie, 5 stops, ¥2), check into your hotel and walk south along the cobbled pedestrian avenue. Saint Sophia Cathedral (¥20, open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is lit up at night, and you can eat borscht and smoked red sausage at Huamei Restaurant (142 Central Street, ¥60 per person).

    Ice and Snow World

    Sleep late because tonight you visit Harbin Ice and Snow World (¥300-350, open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., last entry 8 p.m., best after 5 p.m. when coloured LEDs turn on). Take a taxi from Central Street (¥35, 30 minutes to Sun Island Scenic Area on the north bank of the Songhua River, then cross the bridge). Dress in full winter gear with thermal layers, down parka, insulated boots and hand warmers. Walk through multi-storey ice castles, ice slides (free once inside) and illuminated sculptures until 8:30 p.m. Return by taxi. Buy street snacks near your hotel: tanghulu candied strawberries (¥5) or grilled corn (¥8).

Spend two hours among monumental snow carvings up to 15 metres tall. Otherwise head straight to the airport or train station for your onward journey.
