Guilin

Guilin serves as the staging point for exploration rather than the main event: most travellers spend one night in the city proper, then scatter to river cruises, terraced rice paddies in Longji, and the cycling routes threading Yangshuo County's 20,000 karst hills. The landscape has barely changed since the 8th century, but the infrastructure connecting its viewpoints now includes high-speed rail, electric bike networks and illuminated show caves open until 9pm.

Most international travellers require an L tourist visa issued by Chinese embassies before arrival, valid for single or double entry within 90 days and permitting stays up to 30 days per entry. By train

Airport to city

Airport shuttle buses depart every 20 minutes 6:30am-midnight to downtown hotels near Elephant Trunk Hill, taking 40 minutes and costing ¥20. Taxis to the city center charge ¥80-100 on the meter for the 28-kilometre journey taking 35 minutes. DiDi rideshare apps cost ¥60-75. No metro line reaches the airport as of 2026.

Li River Cruise

The four-hour cruise from Guilin's Mopanshan Pier to Yangshuo covers 83 kilometres past karst peaks named Nine Horses Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal where the 20-yuan banknote view appears. Yangshuo County

This rural county 65 kilometres south of Guilin spreads cycling routes through rice paddies and karst valleys along the Yulong River. The 35-kilometre Yulong River loop passes Yulong Bridge, a 600-year-old stone crossing, and the Jiuxian village where bamboo rafts drift downstream for ¥120 per two-person raft. Longji Rice Terraces

These 700-year-old terraces climb 800 metres up Longsheng mountains 80 kilometres north of Guilin, built by Zhuang and Yao minority farmers. Walk the entire 800-metre street before buying because quality varies between vendors. The market sits 10 minutes walk south from Guilin Railway Station.

Etiquette and ordering

Pay after eating at small noodle shops and night market stalls, before eating at sit-down restaurants where servers bring the bill to your table. Tipping is not customary anywhere in Guilin. Most restaurants accept WeChat Pay and Alipay QR code payment, while smaller vendors require cash. Metro

Guilin Metro Line 1 opened December 2025, running 23 kilometres from Guilin Railway Station south to Guilin West Station via 20 stations including stops at Elephant Trunk Hill, Zhengyang Pedestrian Street, and Seven Star Park. Trains run every 6-8 minutes 6:30am-10:30pm daily. Single rides cost ¥2-5 depending on distance. Line 2 remains under construction through 2026. Taxis and DiDi

Choose this zone only if your schedule demands proximity to the conventional railway station rather than Guilin West for high-speed rail.

These four months see the clearest skies for photography and comfortable cycling temperatures in Yangshuo. March can work if you accept more rain (average 150mm) in exchange for fewer tourists and blooming rapeseed flowers in rural valleys.

Avoid

July and August bring 28-35°C heat with 80 percent humidity and afternoon thunderstorms that cancel river cruises and turn cycling routes into mud tracks. The karst peaks disappear in haze for days. January and February see temperatures drop to 5-12°C with persistent drizzle that soaks through layers. Chinese New Year (late January or early February) floods Guilin with domestic tourists, tripling hotel rates and creating two-hour queues for the Li River cruise. October 1-7 Golden Week similarly overwhelms the city with crowds and ¥500 hotel rooms that cost ¥200 outside the holiday.

Festivals worth timing

Longji Red Clothes Festival celebrates Yao minority culture each October 15-16 in Longsheng County with traditional dress, long-hair combing ceremonies, and rice wine served in wooden homes.
